PALDEN HAMILTON » 2017 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE

The Terraces at Ladew  The Yellow Garden at Ladew The Keyhole Garden at Ladew

We are pleased to introduce award-winning painter and illustrator Palden Hamilton, Ladew’s artist-in-residence for 2017. Palden’s beautiful works range from still life and landscape painting, to portraiture and illustration. Palden has used plein air painting to reconnect to his native landscape, and has built a body of work that portrays the Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim, his mother’s homeland. He will be painting plein air scenes at Ladew throughout the season, culminating in a sale of his works on October 28th. Palden will also have a role in a variety of Ladew's educational programs and special events.

For the last three years, Palden has been juried to participate in Plein Air Easton, the nation’s most prestigious plein air painting event. He won Second Place in the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association Cityscape 2015 at the Peale Center in Baltimore. Palden teaches the portraiture and figure painting classes at the Zoll Studio School of Fine Art, an emerging center of representational painting culture and education in the Baltimore area.

" Through painting, I try to connect more deeply with, and create lasting depictions of, the people, places and things I observe. I also hope to connect with the culture and inquiries of others who have shared the pursuit, ancient and innate, of transfiguring pigments into semblances of the observed world.”   — Palden Hamilton

MARY ANN MEARS » SCULPTURE IN THE GARDEN, A RETROSPECTIVE

LOCATED IN THE WILDFLOWER MEADOW   (THROUGH OCTOBER 31, 2017)

Mary Ann Mears will be featured in our Fall lecture series:
Thursday, October 12 | 10:30 am
Sculpture in the Garden: A Retrospective with Mary Ann Mears
Register by selecting the leaf >>>
She will discuss how she approaches garden sites, whether placing existing pieces or creating new sculpture, and she will share reflections on ways she draws images and inspiration from the natural world.

VOLUPTE QUEEN POPLAR PODS

Mary Ann creates abstract forms that evoke images which are often drawn from nature. Upon return to her studio, she produces many sketches and small-scale models. These evolve into larger models where form and color are further refined. A final design is selected from which patterns are drawn for cutting sheets of aluminum or stainless steel.

Her bold works can be seen in public sites across the states, from Florida to Niagara Falls, as well as abroad. The impetus for her work has emerged from an intense conviction about the powerful role of art in a variety of social/cultural settings, public and private.

“ Each site’s unique qualities, whether physical or human are the source of new ideas that meld with my memories, reflections and imaginings and lead me in new directions. My best work surprises me and paradoxically has an inevitability at the same time.”  – Mary Ann Mears

As an artist who believes deeply in the important place of art in daily life, Mary Ann has been committed to nurturing the arts and arts education in her work in the non-profit sector as a volunteer arts advocate. She is a founding member of Maryland Art Place, helped to craft and successfully lobby for Maryland’s Public Art Bill, is a trustee of Maryland Citizens for the Arts, and is the founder of Arts Education in Maryland Schools (AEMS) Alliance. She serves on the Maryland State Department of Education’s Fine Arts Education Advisory Panel and recently co-chaired the Governor’s P-20 Leadership Council’s Task Force on Arts Education in Maryland Schools. Mary Ann believes that it is critically important for each person to have access to meaningful and high quality arts experiences throughout their lives and has received numerous awards for her artwork and advocacy for the arts.

Throughout the year Mary Ann will have a role in a variety of Ladew’s educational programs, including a talk about her work at a lecture on October 12 - part of Ladew's Fall Lecture Series.

Thanks to the generosity of Mary Ann Mears, a portion of each sale is donated to Ladew Gardens. Click for price list.
